‘Our Five Minute Theatre Experience’ by James Fontana, 14
“We went with the idea that there had been a rumour spread around a school, that the famous actor, Johnny Depp had died.”

Our Improv Academy students were asked to blog about their Five Minute Theatre experiences – here is an entry from James Fontana, 14.
We started the day by plotting out what our piece was going to be about, by using ideas that we had come up with in class and by using completely newly thought of ideas that we had come up with there and then, keeping in mind the theme of youth. We had some trouble coming up with ideas to lengthen our piece, but we decided the outline of our plot before coming up with some more detailed thoughts, in order to lengthen our piece and to connect more with the audience, making sure that our piece fitted in with the five minute time frame that was presented before us.
We had a few complicated ideas that were too difficult to perform, and so we scrapped them, and then we went with our basic idea adding in additional scenes as we continued. We went with the idea that there had been a rumour spread around a school, that the famous actor, Johnny Depp had died, that was eventually put on all the main social networking sites, and was said on the news, soon everyone had known about it. We then went on to find out that it was the brother of a school pupil that had died. His name was Johnny Deep. When everyone is at the school found out the real news no one cared and the sister of the dead boy stood up and said how everyone’s the same even though some people are more famous, we all matter in the same way.
The text in bold was the moral of the story and was a conveyed in a powerful way, and although we struggled to come up with ideas in the first instance we managed to fit our performance in with the five minute boundary.
